I was watching the life story of the Great Bake Off’s Mary Berry and it was truly fascinating as it showed her life in the 1900s and how things were so different! She grew up under quite a stern but loving father who had high expectations for her academically. Unfortunately she was a bit of a disappointment on the schooling front. She deliberately sat at the back of class so she wouldn’t be called on and her head teacher didn’t really have a good word to say about her!
The bombing of her area of Bath and her school set her on a new path. There was a home ec style course which she signed up to. It was led by a lovely teacher they affectionately nicknamed ‘Datey.’ Mary couldn’t wait to attend these wonderful classes as she loved the teacher and course content so much!
Fast forward many years and boom! Cookery becomes her and she is one of the most successful baking peoples ever! She says that ‘Datey’ quite literally changed her life and some 80 books, 6,000,000 copies sold and an apparent net worth of $15,000,000 Mary’s not too badly!
Finding a good teacher can literally change your life. Seek out those who you wish to learn from, where you feel comfortable and/or expanded. For me, I need a supportive, relaxed teacher, definitely not a Gordon Ramsey style (though it appears some do very well under such circumstances!). Surround yourself with support, love and who knows where it’ll take you!
