Here are some of my top tips for keeping your resolutions. This is coming from someone who has both made many resolutions and kept some for many years and forgot others in as little as a few days!
Make a clear, concise list that you can view on a regular basis
Whether it’s a list of goals you want to achieve over the long term or something you wish to implement on a daily basis (e.g. 10 minutes of meditation or a short appreciation list every morning), try to keep it in sight to remind you of it. For example, last year, when I wished to do 60 seconds of a new process everyday (a relaxing breath, a visualisation or repeating an affirmation etc), I wrote a reminder in the rampage I was already reading everyday (since 2010) and consequently remembered to do it. Having it where I could see it regularly made it easier to remember to do it. Compare this to my many other resolutions last year which I didn’t see regularly and now can’t remember what they were!
Start small and gradually build up
If you’re new to making resolutions or doing something new that you wish to do on a regular basis, then my advice would be to start small. It’s much easier, for example, to complete a 3 minute walk than a 1 mile run or to write a list of 3 things you appreciate about your life than 20 things. You want to have things which are easily achievable as you are more likely to do these, especially if you’re not putting them off or dreading them. Then once you have written your 3 things to appreciate, you can start to find more and hopefully add more processes to your daily routine. But if you wake up one morning and have set yourself the target of doing a list of 50 appreciations but just don’t feel in the mood, then you won’t do it one day, then that becomes two days, then three and so on.
Be determined and dogged about doing it
Working to be conscious and to feel good as much as you can, might feel like tough work, especially if you’re used to being negative. And it takes real effort to feel good when things are going pooey around you. However, it’s at that point New Year’s resolutions can go out the window and old patterns can resurface. It’s completely understandable and normal for this to happen as none of us are perfect. However, you just need to be easy on yourself but persistently look for things to do that help you feel good. And as the months go on and you look back on how far you’ve come, you’ll be amazed at the different person you’ve become.
Just do it no matter what
There have been and are many times where I don’t feel like doing a process, or I’m short on time or have fallen asleep but even when these things happen, I just make sure I do something, even if it’s half hearted. Once you’ve got positive momentum, it’s easier to keep on track if you continue to do something positive. However, if you miss one day of practise, that quickly becomes two and then you just forget it altogether.
To summarise, keep going and you’ll enjoy the results over the long term, be easy about it but be committed to your growth.
