In a Hollywood Reporter roundtable, Hilary Swank made a hysterically funny and true point. She pointed out that it's so important to trust your gut and not listen to anyone else trying to coerce you into making a decision (in her case, the choice of movies she would be in), because by the time her movie came out, they wouldn't be anywhere in sight!
That really struck a chord with me. Sometimes, I get so swayed by what someone else wants, that I yield and then when it's time to do whatever, they're nowhere to be seen lol. I now try to reach for a more solid footing of 'This is what I'm going to be doing, if you wish to join in that's great, if not, that's fine too, but I'm definitely doing this because it sounds good to me.'
And usually, if you're strong in your calling and following your passion, then they will fall into line, or it just won't speak to them and they'll fall away, but at least you're not left high and dry regretting following whoever because you felt obligated to.
Be light and easy about it all, stay true to who you are and what calls you forward. Get to know yourself, as you're the only one who's with you your entire life (well you and all that is non physical, but anyhoo...), so make sure you're having fun with yourself! People come and go, they have differing opinions based only on their perspective but they cannot know for you, even if they think they can!
So follow your gut instinct more, most anyone who's doing anything great knows this. I don't think I've ever heard anyone say 'each wonderful decision I made, was one where I went against myself!' And even if that was what made them successful- what a horrible way to live! No, I prefer to make my own decisions based on what I like the sound of.
