Ok, so continuing my New Year's resolution, today was volleyball! (Incidentally, I saw volleyball being played before a badminton session last last week and it rekindled my love for it, it just looks so graceful!).
Anyhoo, it was a beginner's coaching session and OMG, it was soooo good! It was really nice to be amongst other beginners and the coach really broke it down well for us, offering tips and encouragement mixed with humour. A wonderful atmosphere and fun time.
Today really highlighted to me the important of finding a good teacher who fits your style of being!
I had played volleyball many years ago for a handful of sessions, but for some reason as time wore on I just seemed to get worse and worse haha. I blame the teacher hahaha! (Kidding!)
For me, they have to:
- Be able to break things down to basicness (I can be really duh duh when understanding stuff, which has led many a teacher to be like WTF is up with me?! Lol)
- Fun and easy about it. I rarely do well under pressure, least of all if it's doing something I'm not sure of. (Anyone seen Whiplash?! I would crumble under that type of teaching! I would hate to be spoken to like that. I know that for some it brings out the best, but for me, life's way to short to be treated like a piece o poo!)
- Keep a relaxed atmosphere. Be able to be asked questions without the student being afraid. Feeling you're safe in an environment and encouraged no matter what is so important!
So start to work out what works for you. And if you find a good teacher, cling to them! Because a wonderful teacher can quite literally help you change your life, put you on a new path to learning a skill.
I know (even moreso now I've done all these sports) how vital it is to have a strong, aligned, supportive, kind atmosphere in the groups I do. Not everyone loves me/my group and some have probably thought it's a pile of poopy but hey, you can't please everyone all the time! All you can do is your best, stay true to who you are, your mission, your dream and see it through to the utmost of your ability.
Happy supporting yourself and each other!!!
All is so very well! Lots of love, Nick Xxx
