Looking back over my life, I have to say that although I was a very fearful child and teen (defo less so since reading 'Feel The Fear And Do It Anyway' by Susan Jeffers). I haven't let too much stand in my way- least of all myself! Usually, not always, I've just gone out and done whatever I've wanted (despite many warnings from my parents to the contrary!). I've always done my best to data gather though- tremendous introvert that I am. I always like to know as much as I can before entering into a situation.
On a side note Susan Cain- queen of introverts, talked about a study with fish. They found the 'introvert' fish were best when there was a predator (in this case a man with a net trying to catch them), they stood back and watched what happened, when in front of their very eyes, their extrovert counterparts got captured! But, when all the fish were put in a new environment, the 'introvert' fared less well, as the 'extrovert' fish found their emergency survival skills kick in faster. The lesson here, is that all ways of being have their strengths and none is wrong.
Anyhoo, nowadays I'm usually like 'f**k it!' I'll just do it and whatever happens, happens. Part of that comes from dad- he's taught me the mindset of, just to get out there, so what?! You'll learn something and go from there and what's the worst that can happen?! (Dr Pepper!)
I would say, just have your minimums/compromises in place! So if you're going to an event or sport of activity that you're terrified of, just plan an exit route. If you're freelancing- teaching, own business etc, have some criteria in place e.g. If I sell one thing/space on my course/product with three weeks til a set deadline, then I'm going to commit to definitely going ahead. I'll have learned something, it's a new customer and I'll make sure to have fun- making the great experience your priority.
Abe nor I would recommend pushing completely through fear- as we've seen from the Inside Out Disney movie, it's there to keep us safe. But, by just being human and in the world expanding, you're going to experience fear in an unknown, just don't let it stand in the way of living a full life!
Surround yourself with supportive people (and/or be supportive of yourself if this ain't possible), who will be there to encourage you and help pick up the pieces if it goes tats up!!!
Don't be afraid to ask for help! Find the nice, good people who are willing to share their time and knowledge with you.
I believe in you!!!
Happy fear-less-ing!!!
Lots of love, Nick Xxx
