So, today as part of my New Year's Resolution to try new things I went along to a hockey session (having never really played it before!) I re-empathised with anyone going to something for the first time. Silly thoughts ran through my head 'OMG, I am going to like it? Will I be any good? Will they like me? Am I going to get my teeth knocked out?!!!'
Thankfully, it all turned out fine. And I was alright at the sport. However, it really did reiterate to me how tentative one can be when trying something new. So I give a heartfelt thanks to of you who come along to my groups for the first time. I think it's really important to keep an encouraging, relaxed, open atmosphere and I give thanks to my 'oldbies' for helping maintain that space and being committed enough to come along regularly!
During hockey practise, I found that some of those who were more advanced really didn't have the time of day for me but I do understand that everyone has their own agendas. However, it made the world of difference when some of the more encouraging players said 'Well done, you're doing really great!' I really had to reach for supportive, easy, good feeling thoughts especially when I felt I didn't know what on Earth was going on!
So, what I learned today and the advice I offer:
For Teachers
Try doing something new, ideally something that you won't be good at, as it will help you empathise with those who are joining your classes and who might not be comfortable nor confident. Hopefully, it will give you another perspective. It can be really easy to stay in that comfort zone of confidence in what you do, but you might lose touch with the scared newbies who might really need that extra bit of support and encouragement.
For Students
Don't let fear get in the way of trying something out! Be your own best friend and try to give yourself supportive thoughts. It may take a while before you feel comfortable with your new endeavour but be easy about it! Keep learning and trying new things and you will constantly be expanding. When you find a supportive teacher/group/fellow member then make the most of them! Most people are willing to help you along your way (I certainly love to help and see people's lives change- hence this whole website!) and if you come across anyone who doesn't, then release and let them get on with their mean lives haha (joking!)
Anyhoo, I hope you are all enjoying your New Year's resolutions and whatever you have in place for the coming months and years.
Happy expanding!!! All my love, Nick Xxx
