And that is one potent aspect of the groups. It is all too easy to get caught up with the small (and big) things going on in our lives that we forget the simple things- that taking care of ourselves, mentally, physically and spiritually are so core to living a life well lived! All it takes is a good reminder to reconnect with who we really are.
Two of Louise's points which stood out for me are:
Stop scaring yourself
As fear and worry would be the two negative emotional set points that are most practised by myself, this simple statement is relief providing! Be your own wind keeper Rachel!!! (quote from Friends just FYI! lol). Be your own best friend and reach for supportive statements which keep you in that wonderful loving and safe space. Don't freak out everytime things look like they are going anywhere near pear shaped! Instead, relax and breathe and trust that all is well.
Be kind to yourself
Much like the previous statement, be kind and easy on yourself. We advised one lovely participant on how to approach the new exercise class she was doing. My advice was to expect to be crap at it for the first few lessons. I don't mean this in a negative sense, but go in with the mindset of 'I've never done this before, so I am not going to hold myself to unrealistic expectations. If I'm totally shite at this then that's going to be ok because what do you expect? I'm just here to learn, experience it and see how it goes and hopefully have some fun.' And it's this easy frame of mind which has helped me be 'brave' enough to learn and try anything (within reason) that looks like it might float my boat. And as I mentioned before, there are many things which I've been God awful at, but I know my life, learning, and experience is much richer and brilliant for it.
So tying that in with any New Year's resolution that you might have- step out into the world and give it a new activity try. If it looks like it would be fun or it's calling you on some level then have a go. Who knows how your life might change as a result and if not, then you'll have learnt a little something along the way.
Speaking of which, all being well, as part of my resolution to try new things, I'm hoping to do either Badminton (haven't played for probably a decade) or Hockey (never really played!) on Sunday. And I expect to be thoroughly crap at it but I will have so much fun! And if nothing else, then it will give me something to blog about Sunday evening, so tune back in!
Lots of love and happy 'trying-new-things-out-this-January' January!!! Nick Xxx
